The wooden cover family has 3 main different styles
Pergolas - Open Lattice Covers - Solid Covers
A Wood Pergola is defined as more of a garden feature. It is free-standing, detached from the house and provides partial shade to all that lies beneath it.
Since both styles have a similar structure they are being used for almost the same purposes: support for climbing plants, partly shading the area in which you entertain guests or just beatifying the back of your home.
A Wood patio cover, Open Lattice style refers to a wood structure that is attached to the back of the house in most cases and provides partial shade for the patio area only.
A Solid Wood patio Cover refers to a wood structure that is attached to the back of the house in most cases and provides complete shelter from sun and rain for the patio area only.

Construction of Wooden Patio Covers – In short
The Free-Standing, Open-Lattice Wood Patio Covers and Pergolas are built the same way. The most popular techniques are to mount four posts into a concrete foundation or to install the posts on top of designated base posts, which are also mounted in concrete. Next, the supporting beams, installed between the posts, connect all the posts together, which later will be used as the base for the wooden open-lattice cover. Finally, depending upon the amount of sunlight desired, we evenly install the lattice work on top of the beams.
Solid Wood Patio Covers provide complete shelter from the sun and rain, which means that the roof structure needs to be designed with a slope for water to easily drain away from the house. As such, there is a need for roofing materials to be used as well. This patio cover requires an extra roofing construction process.
